Center for Innovation in the Arts
The Center for Innovation in the Arts (formerly the Music Technology Center) was created in 1993 to provide students with opportunities to use technology in the creation and performance of new works. Since then the program has expanded to include classes in music production, film scoring and performance technology.
Music Technology Center
The Music Technology Center365体育投注网 is a three-room production suite located adjacent to the Willson Theater. This cutting-edge facility provides students with the opportunity to have hands-on training and experience with industry-standard recording, composing, and performing technologies. Each room in the Music Technology Center is modular, allowing for creative use of space and technology.
Mix and Record Suite
365体育投注网At the heart of the center is a Euphonix MC Pro workstation that controls a Macintosh computer system loaded with a wide array of software and virtual instruments. The main control room overlooks a 400-square-foot floating-floor live room, which is equipped with a Yamaha C7 grand piano. Classes in Film Scoring and Music Production are taught in the Mix and Record rooms. Students enrolled in C.I.A. classes have the opportunity to compose, record, and mix their own compositions.
365体育投注网The Playroom is an open-space room dedicated to using digital technology in live performance. It houses our MIDI and custom-built instruments, a modular and portable surround sound speaker system, and a workbench to develop new technologies. This room may also be used as a second live room when patched into the Mix Room.
Introduction to Music Production
Greg Kalember or Nathan Prillaman
An introduction to the basic skills needed for composing and producing music in a studio environment. Topics of study include sequencing, sampling, sound editing and basic signal processing. Emphasis will be given to Logic Pro although other commonly used music production software will be introduced. Class work will include weekly composition and listening assignments. A solid understanding of Mac OS X or higher is required.
Introduction to Interactive Music Technology
This course will introduce the basics of interactive music technology. Emphasis will be given to MaxMSP however, other software, such as Ableton LIVE, will also be covered. Weekly assignments and long-term projects are designed to serve students individual creative interests and professional needs. A solid understanding of Mac OS X or higher is required.
Composing with Technology
This course will provide composers with the basic tools and techniques needed to create music in a contemporary production environment. Topics of study will include basic acoustics and sound production, sequencing and recording, arranging for electronic instruments, sound editing, signal processing, and mixing. Critically acclaimed recordings of music of various styles and genres will serve as focal points of study. Classwork will include composition assignments, critical listening, and discussions and a long-term creative project. A basic understanding of Mac OS X is required.

A survey of music production techniques used by composers, arrangers, and producers in the recording industry. Topics of study include creating rhythm tracks, arranging for electronic instruments and basic mixing skills. Class work includes weekly composition assignments and a long-term creative project. Critically acclaimed recordings of music of various styles and genres will serve as focal points of study. A solid understanding of Logic Pro is required.
Scoring to Picture
Edward Bilous/William Fastenow
For students interested in learning the fundamental skills needed to compose and produce music for film, television and other narrative media. Topics include, spotting a picture, creating a composition that supports a visual narrative and basic production techniques. Critically acclaimed scores of various styles and genres will serve as focal points of study. Coursework will include weekly composition assignments in which students will be required to create original music to excerpts from feature films, documentaries and other filmed media. A solid understanding of Logic Pro is required.
Advanced Interactive Music Technology
For advanced students interested in using interactive performance technology. Class work will include weekly and long-term projects that feature live interaction between computers using MaxMSP and electronic or acoustic instruments. A solid understanding of MaxMSP is required. Selected projects will be eligible for performance on Beyond the Machine, A Festival of Interdisciplinary and Multimedia Art at Juilliard.

Beyond the Machine
Beyond the Machine365体育投注网 is a multimedia performance environment that offers young musicians, actors, and dancers the opportunity to bring their creative ideas to life with new technology. Our programs feature collaborations with creative artists from around the world who share an interest in new media and interdisciplinary work. Now in its 16th year, the festival has grown to include biannual performances of new music and multimedia art.
Beyond the Machine programs feature innovative performance technology that allows artists to expand the range of their instruments, control audio and visual elements with electronic tools, shape video and projection design in real time, and interact with artists and computers around the world via the Web.
